7 CB Radio Facts
You have radio waves coming into all of our dwellings each day in the form of Tv shows and radio broadcasts, but the splendor of citizens band radio is the fact that we all are able to respond, and as opposed to a cellphone, we do not have to spend money for the opportunity. Always meant for short range communications, citizens band radio has incredibly risen to the trials of time and advancing technologies.
1. Licensing. Unlike CB Radio users in the UK and Europe, CB users in the USA do not need a license. CB Radio is regulated by the FCC inside the USA and you are required to have a copy of the applicable rules. In the US cb radio uses Am frequencies. The European CB Radio operates on FM frequencies.
2. Choice of ‘rigs’.There are three main types of cb radio setups. These are CB Base Station ,mobile in-vehicle units and Handheld CB Radios. Handheld CB Radio units can be very useful, but usually have more limited range than in-vehicle or base station radios, this is partly because they are lower power, and partly because they have much shorter antennae.
3. Call Signs. Although official call signs in the US are long gone, in Europe they are still somewhat common. Many US CB radio users have a cool nickname or ‘handle’.
4. CB Radio Channels. CB Radio useres currently have 40 standard channels in the US. Channel 9 is regulated to be the emergency channel, it is reccomended to avoid channel 8 and 10 to allow channel 9 to come through loud and clear.
5. Squelch. The squelch dial on your radio is designed to get rid of all the irritating beeps, squeaks and static. Turn the squelch down until most of the annioying static has dissapeared and then leave the dial there. You should be able to hear someone trying to break through.
6. Long Distance Communication. CB radio is intended to be a short range communications tool only. If the conditions in the ionisphere are right you can talk over hundreds or even thousands of miles. Take care when communicationg with someone far away. Communicating by CB radio with someone more than 150 miles way is not legal in the USA.
7. Cb radios can be useful in lots of situations, not just when travelling or communicating from a vehicle to a home base. Base stations cb radios can be life savers in an emergency and people often set them up to run on alternative sources of energy.
Although CB radio is in the technology stoneage it does do one thing that you cell phone cant, it allows you to meet new people anonymously over the road.. CB lets you talk with other drivers as you go, so even in isolated areas you can find someone to chat to or give you useful directions.
